Six mornings north of the Douro: reservations for single days in Porto and the Minho

Granite inland, schist east, trawlers west

North of the Douro the ground changes twice inside sixty miles. On the coast the work is fish: boxes come off the trawlers at Matosinhos and go by falling price on a wet concrete floor before the city has had coffee. Inland the granite starts, and with it vines trained overhead on stone posts, river towns with one market street, and forges that still sharpen for farms twenty miles out. East of that the schist begins and the slope goes close to vertical, held up by mortarless walls that somebody has to rebuild every winter. The Minho itself is a frontier older than either country, and people still cross it by oar. All six days sit within two hours of each other by road, which is the only reason a week made of them holds together.

What did not make the list

Days that did not make this list mostly failed the same way. The work had been set up that morning for people watching, or the hours were padded with a long lunch and a shop at the end, or the thing only happens for eight weeks and was being imitated in March. What is left is six days that would run with nobody standing there. The auction is at that hour because ice melts. The wall crew works when the ground is dry, not when reservations are heavy. The market in Amarante is on Wednesday because it has been Wednesday since long before the present bridge, and the poultry, seed and knives are on the same street because that is where they have always been.

Three days is a sensible week

There is no seven day itinerary on this site and the office will not invent one. It takes the days you name, puts beds and road time between them, and says plainly what the gaps look like. Three of these six is about right for four nights: one that starts before light, one full day, and one short enough to leave an afternoon loose. The fish quay finishes at 09:00 and gives the rest of that day back. The pressing day and the wall day are both long and should not sit together. Two days that each need eight people in one week is a real gamble, because one may not fill. Each figure holds that day and the movement inside it, not the bed the night before and not the road between towns; those are quoted beside it.

Can I take all six days in one week?

You can name all six and the office will try to place them. Two start before 06:00 and two run past 16:00, so the week is heavier than it looks written down. In practice people who ask for six move one, usually the forge, into a second trip. Name all six anyway; you will get a plain answer about which of them your dates actually hold.

Will you arrange the flights and the trains that get me there?

No. No leg of any day is carried by this office through the air or over the sea, and it holds no contract with any carrier that does so, so nothing here covers reaching Portugal or leaving it. It places the days, the beds between them, and the road transport inside a day where that day includes it. The company running each day bills you directly in its own name; this office takes no payment and holds no card details.

Is the pressing day in the Vinho Verde a tasting?

No. It is a work day at a press: fruit in, granite screw down, raw juice out, and a great deal of hosing afterwards. Nothing is poured for visitors as a set piece, and this office sells no drink of any kind and never will. What anyone does at the end of a working day is their own business and forms no part of the figure you are quoted.
