Hours the tide sets, in order

Your day is confirmed for a date, and the hour arrives later, once the low water for that morning is read off the tables. Expect anything from before dawn to mid afternoon. You are collected at an agreed point in the village, driven fifteen minutes to the coast road, then walked out to a shoulder of rock above the working ground. The gatherers go down when the sea allows and come up when it stops allowing, which is often inside forty minutes. After that the catch is sorted by size on the quay, and you watch that part standing close enough to see it done. You are back at the meeting point about three hours after you left it.

Ground underfoot, and standing still

Twenty five minutes of walking, most of it off any made path, on wet granite, loose scree and heather. There is about sixty metres of climb and the same coming down. No handrail exists anywhere on the traverse and none is going to be put there for you. You stand still in wind and spray for an hour or more, so the cold is the part people underestimate, not the walk. Boots with a hard sole, a shell layer, something for your hands. If you are unsteady on uneven rock, or you cannot stand for ninety minutes without a seat, say so before you book and we will tell you plainly that this is the wrong day for you.

The figure of $214 per person holds the local guide who works alongside the gathering crew, the standing position agreed with them in advance, the transfer between the village and the coast road, and the sorting on the quay afterwards. It does not hold your travel to Galicia, a bed for the night, food, or anything you buy on the quay. It does not hold cover of any kind against injury or a lost day, and this office sells none. Because the day is private only, the figure moves with the size of your group and is confirmed in writing before anything is held. The company running the day bills you directly, in its own name. This office takes no payment and holds no card details.

Awkward things people ask about this day

Can we go down onto the rocks with the gatherers?

No. That is a working shift for them and the ground they stand on is under water minutes later. Nobody takes a visitor down there, and we will not ask on your behalf. You watch from a shoulder of rock the crew choose themselves, close enough to see hands and knives, far enough that nobody has to look after you. If that is not the day you pictured, this is not the day to book.

What happens if the sea is too rough that morning?

Then nobody goes in, including the crew, and the day is moved rather than run badly. We hold a second date in the same week wherever your dates allow. If none of them works, the operator returns what you paid it, on its own written terms, which you see before you agree to anything. Rough water is common on this coast between November and March, so ask for a wider window if your trip is short.

Do we eat what comes out of the water?

Not as part of this day. What the crew brings up is sorted, weighed and gone within hours, and it is not ours to hand out.
