You meet at a lane end at half past five, in the dark, and walk about seven hundred metres to the hide with one shielded light between the group and none at all for the last stretch. The slot is opened slowly, because a hide that bangs has already spent its morning. Then you sit: an hour of black, an hour of grey, and the river coming up out of it. The warden reads the shore for sign before you go in and again as you come out, which is often the more useful half of the morning. Nine o'clock and it is finished, whatever has or has not happened.

How often anything shows, honestly

Roughly one morning in four produces an otter, and when it happens it is a wake, a head for eight seconds, and gone. It is not a scene and nobody can make it one. On the other three mornings what stands is the sign: spraint left on a flat stone, five toed prints in silt, willow cut clean by beaver, a dipper working the shallows, a heron on the far side. The warden will tell you when you arrive what the week has actually been like, including when the answer is nothing at all. This office makes no claim about what appears, because nobody owns the river or the animals in it.

From $118 per person, the least expensive day on this site. It holds the warden's morning from half past five until nine, the hide, and use of a shared telescope on a tripod. It does not hold the drive to the lane end, breakfast afterwards in the village, or clothing. Dress for sitting rather than for walking: three hours without moving at four degrees is colder than a hard walk at zero, and the single thing that ruins this morning is cold feet. The warden bills you directly in his own name; no money passes through this office, nothing about your card is seen here, and the share it earns arrives from them later.

Will we see an otter?

Possibly not, and nobody can promise otherwise. Roughly one morning in four gives a sighting and it is usually seconds long. We describe and reserve this day as three hours in a hide by a cold river with a warden who reads sign, because that is what is actually being bought. If a sighting is the only thing that would make the morning worth having, choose a different day.

Can children sit for two hours in silence?

Some can and most cannot, so we do not reserve this morning for anyone under ten, and we will ask honest questions about a ten year old. It is dark, cold and completely still, and one restless person empties the shore for everybody in the hide. Other days on this site involve walking, noise and things to handle, and they suit younger travellers far better.

What if the river is high after rain?

The warden moves the morning. High water after two days of rain scatters the animals and puts the shore under, and he would rather reschedule than take money for a blank hide. You are told the evening before and the date is changed at no cost. If your week holds no other morning, the payment simply never happens, because it is taken by him and not by us.
